ABS is used in de-chlorination of water.

It also has uses as an oxygen scavenger in the oil and gas industry, and various applications in the food industry including sugar beet processing and the caramel coloring process.

    ABS is an aqueous ammonium bisulfite solution that effectively neutralizes cyanide in the Inco SO2/Air process. 

    It does this through a chemical reaction known as an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction.

    Cyanide ions (CN-) are reduced to cyanate ions (OCN-) by ammonium bisulfite. Cyanate is much less toxic than cyanide and will decompose to form carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which are harmless.

    ABS is a reducing agent that can effectively neutralize or reduce chlorine compounds in water.

    Chlorine is often added to water supplies as a disinfectant to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. However, residual chlorine in the water can have adverse effects, such as causing health issues in humans and harming aquatic life. Thus, it is often necessary to dechlorinate the water before it is used or discharged.

    Liquid bisulfite food additives meet strict FDA guidelines in support of your critical food processing requirements.

    Applications in the food industry include sugar beet processing, the caramel coloring process and other wet corn milling processes.
